No women were at the county’s senior citizen center in Carrabelle Friday afternoon for a lunchtime seminar, other than two health department nurses and the ladies who run the center, because they weren’t invited.
In the front of the room was a large screen with the projection of a brightly-colored medical textbook illustration of male genitalia.
In front of the screen stood Dr. Thomas Schoborg, a board-certified Atlanta urologist who was the afternoon’s presenter.
At each of the place settings, where a lunch of lasagna and salad was served, were envelopes filled with information on everything from treating erectile dysfunction to men’s cancer screenings.
About three dozen men waited in the audience to ask questions, about their own bouts with heart disease or high blood pressure, about the threat of skin, colon and prostate cancers, and of course about a friend of theirs who has “this problem.”
No shortage of questions confronted Schoborg, and his answers kept everyone in high spirits and well-informed in the seminar entitled “Health Concerns Facing Today’s Man, ” sponsored by the county health department and the senior center.
Questions like how come I got a headache from using Viagra? (An effect of the systemic vasodilatory properties of the drug. Its two competitors, Cialis and Levitra, may work better in this regard for some patients)
Or what’s the top three leading cause of death in men? (According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention National Center for Health Statistics data, the top three in 2004 were heart disease, stroke, and cancer.)
