Seadoo Record Holder Returns to Apalachicola

John Moffatt is back in Apalachicola for the first time in eight years.

Moffatt passed through the city in 2000 on his first attempt to capture the Guinness Book of World Records title for the longest journey on a Seadoo Jet ski.

“I came through here in 2000 and set the world record, but I wrote a bunch of magazine articles and did a lot of interviews and the record was immediately broken all over the world. I never got my certificate from Guinness and it’s bothered me all of these years, so two years ago I decided I’d set the record again,” said Moffatt.

“I have two really nice memories of Apalachicola from my last trip,” said Moffatt. “One was eating at Boss Oyster and the other was of Mr. Pendleton from the Citgo station. I had just come ashore, I was staying at the Rainbow Inn down on the water and I walked up to the gas station. He had all of this Dale Earnhardt memorabilia and I asked him about it. He was very kind to me and I appreciated his passion. I’ve never forgotten him.”

On his most recent trip, Moffatt is attempting to break a record set by two Australians who rode around the Continent of Australia. His current journey will take him just over 12,000 miles.

Moffatt set out from Miami on June 8. He traveled up the east coast to New York City, up the Hudson to Canada and followed the St. Lawrence Seaway to Montreal and ultimately Kingston, Ottawa.
